Frequently Asked Questions
1️⃣ What is a flint?
A flint is a hand tool used to strike sparks that initiate a fire. A modern flint is usually in the form of a short rod made of ferrocerium, an alloy with pyrophoric properties (self-igniting on contact with oxygen). Rubbing the ferrocerium rod with a hard object, e.g. a knife or steel dredge, strips off ferrocerium particles, which, when in contact with oxygen (an oxidation process), produce sparks with temperatures as high as 3000°. There are also flints consisting of a ferrocerium rod and a magnesium bar. The scraped magnesium shavings are treated as a fire starter, which is ignited by sparks wicked from the ferrocerium bar. The fire starter works, even when wet, regardless of weather conditions and temperature.
2️⃣ How to use a flint?
An incendiary is only used to create high-temperature sparks (the source of the fire). However, even the most caloric sparks cannot light a campfire without properly prepared kindling. As kindling we can use birch bark, hemp bundles, cotton wool, cotton flakes, ordinary handkerchief, charred cotton, wooden shavings, or use ready-made solutions such as Light My Fire TinderSticks and eco-friendly Eco Fire tabkets.
