Frequently Asked Questions
1️⃣ What kind of throwing knives?
Most knives are not suitable for throwing. Special versions of knives called darts are designed for this purpose. Throwing knives have a simple, even minimalist full tang construction, devoid of parts that could be damaged by a fall or impact on a hard surface. Darts are made from a single piece of stainless or carbon steel and usually have no facings on the handle. In addition to their simple form, darts have a strong and sharp tip (they often have several blades, e.g. shurikens), adequate length and even balance. This design allows you to throw a knife regardless of which side you hold the knife. Inexpensive Joker knives, which come in several sizes and shapes, are perfect for learning to throw.
2️⃣ What stones for sharpening knives?
When deciding on the purchase of stones, it is worth betting on an overview of the most necessary, which we can then supplement, expanding our capabilities. Stones with gradations of 240, 400 and 800 will allow us both to correct a chipped edge and to smooth and pre-polish it, guaranteeing an effectively cutting edge. If you use knives made of highly hardened steels, it is worth opting for more effective diamond stones.
3️⃣ What knife sharpening angle?
We choose the sharpening angle according to the purpose of the knife. Precision kitchen knives will be sharpened at an angle of 14-18 degrees. Hunting and EDC knives should be sharpened at an angle of 20 degrees, which will provide an optimal compromise between sharpness and edge durability. Bushcraft and survival knives, on the other hand, should be given a 25-degree angle, which will increase resistance to damage during heavier field work.
