Frequently Asked Questions

1️⃣ Which axe to choose for woodworking?

The choice of axe depends on the tasks. For general work, a forestry axe or hatchet with a length of 50-70 cm and a weight of 1-1.5 kg will work well for both chopping wood and limbing branches. For splitting thick logs, choose a splitting axe with a long handle. For small jobs and carrying in a backpack, a camping axe will work well. Always pay attention to the head and handle material and balance. A good example of a versatile hatchet/ axe for bushcraft purposes would be MORA or JOKER brand models.

2️⃣ What is the difference between a bushcraft axe and a regular axe?

A bushcraft axe is smaller, lighter and more manageable than a regular axe, making it easy to fit in a backpack and allow precise work in the field. A regular axe is larger and heavier, better suited for chopping large pieces of wood, but is less practical for expeditions. A bushcraft axe also often has a contoured blade and ergonomic handle, adapted to a variety of camp tasks. A good example of a versatile axe for bushcraft purposes would be MORA or JOKER brand models.

3️⃣ What features should a good hiking axe have?

A good hiking axe should, first of all, be lightweight and compact, so that it fits easily in your equipment and does not generate too much load. It should also have a durable steel head and a sturdy, preferably composite or wooden handle with non-slip properties. It also needs to be versatile, allowing you to chop smaller branches as well as prepare kindling or do minor camp work.

4️⃣ Are hunting axes suitable for chopping wood?

Hunting axes are usually characterized by lighter weight and more manageable, designed mainly for smaller jobs. They are suitable for limbing branches or preparing kindling for a campfire. They can be used to chop smaller pieces of wood, but for effective splitting of larger logs heavier splitting axes are much more suitable. For example, you can find the Oak Camp Forge brand or the Condor brand.

5️⃣ How to take care of an axe blade in off-road conditions?

In off-road conditions, it's a good idea to regularly clean the axe blade of resin and moisture to prevent corrosion. You should also sharpen the cutting edge with a sharpener whenever you notice dullness. When you're done, it's a good idea to protect the blade with a sheath or lightly grease it to extend its life. Among axes, we can especially recommend Robens, Walther, Mil-Tec or Condor brands.
