The author of the book-Horace Kephart-is an extremely colorful character. He was perfectly educated, his career was rapidly developing, he had a happy family and a collection of old, precious books.

In 1904, at the age of 42, Kephart made the fateful decision to abandon his previous life, live in an abandoned mountain hut and, for the rest of his days, lead the life of a simple forest man.

After two years spent in the wilderness, he published a book called "The Book of Camping and Woodcraft," in which, thanks to his extensive knowledge and experience, he extensively and colorfully described the issues of forest camping, modern equipment, hunting techniques, weapons, camp cooking and the knowledge inherent in being in the wilderness.

Published in 1906, the book became a bestseller and has invariably stood as one of the most important and widely read items of bushcraft literature for more than 100 years.
